Description
When I was pregnant with my first I kept my head firmly in the sand when it came to birth. I barely read anything about what would happen, instead I spent my time preparing teeny tiny baby clothes and dreaming about our idyllic life as a family of 3. (Ha!)
It’s probably no surprise then that my first labour and birth didn’t really go to plan (because I didn’t really have one!)
Second time round I vowed to do things differently.
I read everything I could on birth. I quizzed everyone I knew who already had a baby. I did a hypnobirthing course and of course, I practiced a LOT of yoga.
My second birth was one of the most empowering experiences of my life. I remember feeling like a superwoman afterwards and being so proud of myself.
What was the biggest difference? I wasn’t afraid of birth. I trusted my body knew what to do and I knew how to keep myself calm to let my body take over.
I can’t tell you how important it is to educate yourself about how your body works during birth and how you can work with it.
There are loads of birth education courses out there these days. I don’t really think it matters which one you choose to go with – Hypnobirthing, Calmbirth, Shebirths etc. I even have my own Yoga Wisdom for Birth course that you can access via my Online Yoga Circle.
What matters most though is that you prepare yourself with the skills and knowledge you’ll need during labour and birth. One of the most important things to learn is how to breathe during stressful situations and how to relax your body on command. (Both things yoga for pregnancy focus on).
These three classes will help you to start practicing yoga tools you can use during labour to release fears, feel confident and surrender to the process of birth.
