Light On Yoga Challenge

I’ve been getting back into yoga this year, focusing more on my own practice which had previously fallen to the bottom of the list below everything else I do (entertaining Eamon, teaching yoga, supply teaching, Masters, sewing, etc).

And whilst I have managed to make it to the mat most days this year, I want a challenge.  Ideally I would love to be going to regular classes, learning from a teacher, being pushed by them.  But, as that is not possible in the middle of nowhere, I have to create this challenge for myself.  And so I will.

I’ve decided to do the weekly asana sequences that are outlined by Mr Iyengar at the back of Light on Yoga.  Course one goes for 30 weeks, though if I’m honest my (bite off more than I can chew) brain wants to commit to all three.   But I don’t want to make it seem to unachievable either so we’ll start with one.

Now I could easily make this a private challenge and not share here, on this blog.  But I also want (possibly need) some accountability and I’m hoping for some community as well. I’m hoping others out there might want to get involved. Whether that be by practicing the poses with me week by week (I plan to outline them so you won’t need the book), reflecting on your own blogs, commenting after my weekly/fortnightly posts or just reading for your own interest.  It doesn’t matter how or when.  You might lose the plot one week (hell, I’m sure I’ll have bad weeks, who knows with little bear in tow) and come back to it the next.

I’m not the first to do this.  A little internet research reveals Jenny and Ariana at Light on Light on Yoga embarked on this very same challenge a year ago, but they are already up to course two and I want to start at the beginning.  Week one and two start at beginner poses and could only take you 15 minutes, depending on how long each pose is held.

What do I want to achieve by doing this? Hopefully renew my motivation for yoga, challenge myself in poses I’ve never tried before, prove to myself I can do regular practice with a little one in tow, learn more to improve my teaching and maybe connect with like-minded others.

So… Who’s with me?

(I plan to start Monday the 4th of Feb)

Week 1 & 2 can be found here.

If you have access to a class, you definitely should!

  • I’ll be with you! I haven’t done yoga in a bit over 3 Yeats ( I stopped attending when I was pregnant with my first ), but before that I was considering training as a yoga teacher, so I’d love to get back into it! As long as you’re going to outline the course non here, and I can ease myself into it, I’ll give it a shot !

Just came across your blog today and am ecstatic that I did! I’m currently training for a half marathon and yoga is such a wonderful way to strengthen and balance my body after the miles I put in every week. I have a hard time staying motivated and sticking to my practice though, so I’m excited to join you in this challenge. Thank you for sharing your goals!
