Are you suffering from sciatica pain during pregnancy? Many women in my prenatal classes explain it as literally a pain in the butt?!

What is sciatica pain?

Sciatica is a common condition during pregnancy and is caused by inflammation of the sciatica nerve which runs from the lower back all the way down the back of both legs.

What causes sciatica pain during pregnancy?

The inflammation is usually caused by pressure to this nerve due to changes in the body.  The changes that can contribute include an in-balance in the hips area (tight hips, hamstrings, quads), movement in the pelvis as it expands to widen for the baby, baby’s head pressing on the nerve, weight gain and fluid retention.

What can you do to relieve sciatica pain during pregnancy?

  • Rest where possible and take weight off the legs
  • Sleep on the opposite side
  • Stay gently active – swimming, yoga, etc.
  • Seek help – physiotherapy, chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, prenatal massage – don’t suffer silently!

Today I’m sharing a gentle yoga flow that you can do to help relieve sciatica pain during pregnancy.  (Of course, make sure you’ve seen a physio or someone first to get specific advice for you before practicing this flow).
